Thursday Thoughts

1. Sunday Morning Worship - This week we will begin a brand new preaching series centered around our Methodist heritage. Pastor Loida kicks things off this week with "A Methodist Loves God" as she reflects on Matthew 22:36-38. We will also be celebrating communion at all three Sunday services.

Invite a friend to come with you this weekend. We'll be worshipping at 8am, 9:30am, and 11am.

*Just a reminder. There is no Thursday Seven02Worship during January and February as our Upwards League reaches out to the community in that space.

2. Winterfest - It's here! This weekend. Saturday!

This is a great opportunity for us to share the love and grace of Christ with the people of this community. If you have never had the chance to come to Winterfest, I want you to imagine our entire grass lot covered with all sorts of food tents, rides, and an ice slide. You can come and climb a rock wall, jump in a bounce house, eat fried dough and hot dogs, and travel down a slide made of ice. And that is just a portion of what is available. The list goes on and on – chili cook-off, prizes, entertainment from local groups, a place to be prayed over, and more. Oh, and did I mention that everything is free. Free admission, free rides, free food, and free prizes. It is all free!

Please be in prayer for the event and we'll see you outside!

3. GROW Night Has Returned - Wednesday Night dinners and the kickoff for new GROW night classes have begun. We have new class choices and new subjects aimed at helping you grow deeper in your faith. These classes are great ways to explore your faith, meet new people, and feel the power of the Holy Spirit in your life. We hope you will make plans to join us each week as we GROW together!

4. UPWARDS is in full swing! - Practices for basketball and cheerleading are on Tuesdays in the Family Life Center and games are on Thursdays throughout January and February.

We've got a great group of kids signed up to participate and wonderful adults to help out - please keep this program in your prayers for a safe season of good sportsmanship; and if you have a chance, come on out on a Thursday at 6pm for the juniors and 7pm for the seniors and cheer these kids on!

5. A New Adventure! - A new year can bring with it new adventures. If you are looking for a new adventure in your life here at Community, we have an opportunity for you. We are looking for volunteers in several areas of our Sunday morning time together. We are looking for Ushers, Communion Stewards, Golf Cart Drivers, and Tech Booth Operators. No previous experience is needed and we will provide all the training. We are extremely grateful for those that are volunteering in these capacities right now and would love to welcome more people to these ministries.

It takes many hands to make our Sunday mornings as special as they are, and we could use your help. If you are interested in volunteering in any of these areas, please contact the church office and we will get you plugged in. We look forward to seeing you at worship and working with you as we worship our Gracious God together!

Have a wonderful rest of your week and we look forward to seeing you in worship this weekend!

Midweek Moment

Yesterday at Staff Meeting we reflected around the table for a bit about this question: "What will be different in 2019?"

We all see 2019 as a wonderful year of opportunities ahead for Community. Staff and our leadership are working on all kinds of exciting things that will be coming in the days ahead. I shared with staff that in my area of working with committees, it has been exciting to see so many new faces in meetings thus far this year and to hear the interesting perspectives and ideas that these folks bring. Other things that were shared around the table included planning for collaborative ministry between the musicians in our Contemporary and Traditional worship ministries, our Community Christian School exploring VPK for the fall, and our scouting program continues to expand - we included girls in Cub Scouts last year which has gone well and we will be one of the first chartering organizations in Lake and Sumter counties to charter a troop for girls in the new Scouts BSA program. Exciting stuff!
Keep our ministries as well as our leadership and staff in your prayers, that we may always be faithful to listen to the voice of God in leading and directing our church.

Winterfest is almost upon as well - this Saturday! It may be the 14th annual event, but there are some new vendors and we have moved the locations around for some things on the property. The Winterfest Committee has been working hard for months and they've done plenty of new advertising as well to get the word out about this wonderful event - our annual gift to our community. We look forward to seeing you there!

Blessings

Midweek Moment

Dear Friends,

We began living into our new leadership structure for 2019 last night as the Church Leaders Council met for the very first time. It was a great time of sharing as we got to know one another a bit and began to look at our common tasks in this year ahead. We shared about challenges in different ministry areas, but we chose to frame those not as obstacles but as opportunities and that we as leaders and pastors feel that Community is up to the tasks.

The people representing you in the Leaders Council are as follows: Dave Withers, chair; Kevin Milhorn, vice-chair; Mike Hanna, Lay Leader; Mike Weer, Chair of Finance; Sandi Moore, Chair of Staff Parish Relations; George Clive, Chair of Trustees; Pastor Loida, Pastor Daryl and myself; as well as our four Pillar Leaders: Kathi Moschos with Connect, Dorothy Wockenfuss with GROW, Giselle Lawn with Missions (represented last night by Elsa Kaye), and Diane Parette with Foundations.

In the coming days and weeks ahead you will see some inserts in the weekly worship bulletins highlighting these different ministry areas and how you can connect with folks regarding questions or concerns you might have.

Please be in prayer for these leaders in 2019 and for all of our church's elected leaders and ministry volunteers.

Blessings,

Midweek Moment

Greetings my friends,

This month we began a new preaching series, Making Sense of God’ Will. Thus far we have looked at two questions; “God, Where Are You” and “God, Are You Listening?” We have talked about the understanding that God walks with us in all circumstances and that God’s work in our lives can come in many different forms in our requests made to God – from ‘yes’, to ‘no’, to the difficult experience of ‘wait’.

This week, Pastor Loida, will look to the question of “God, What Should I Do?” and I will wrap the series up the following week as look at the feeling of “God, I Can’t Do This Alone!” Each of these questions will continue to look at how we experience God in our own lives, and in those moments where we are unsure of the future or just mired in the midst of life.

We planned out this series for a few reasons. One was because of its relatability. Each of us, at some point and in some form, have asked these questions. People new to the faith, lifelong disciples, laity, and clergy, have all asked these questions. By looking at these questions together, we are hoping to help create a common bond in our corporate faith with one another.

Second, was because we hoped it would help give words to some of the feelings we all have in this life. Not only do we as believers ask these questions, those for whom the church is not a part of their story ask them as well. We live around these people, work with these people, love these people, are related to these people. The closer we are to them, the more we live life with them, the more they know about our faith, the more likely they may ask us about how to deal with these questions. We hope this series will give all of us a few words to help with those discussions.

The final reason, and most important, was because we felt God asked us to. Every October, Pastors Debbie, Loida, and myself take a day and we plan the entire upcoming year. We pick sermon series, titles, Scriptures, and decide when to do each of them. We do this so planning is easier and so can be a bit more intentional about certain things. And every year as we engage in this discipline, we are left in awe at how God shows up in it and through it. It happens in those instances when the right series is preached at the right time. When new friends show up and tell us that message and the service that surrounded it was exactly what they needed to hear. When members of Sunday School classes come up to us and tell us the sermon and the service was the same topic they discussed in their class. For me, that is the hand of God at work in this world.

So when we plan out these sermon series, and any of us feel that “nudge” we listen. We know there is a reason, we trust in that presence of the Holy Spirit in that moment, and we follow.

As 2019 unfolds, I pray you find connection not only in the worship but in one another. I pray you feel God’s hand more often than not. I pray you experience the incredible feeling that comes as you walk this life with God. And I pray we daily find strength our common life and faith.

Blessings to you all,
