Midweek Moment - New Service!

Greetings friends,

Seven02 is coming as we are just a week away. We are very excited about this new opportunity to worship and gather! Below is a video that explains the purpose of this new service, how this service came to be and the premise of why we are doing it. I invite you to share this with anyone who could benefit from it and ask that you keep this new endeavor in your prayers.

We hope to see you there!

Thursday Thoughts

1. Sunday Morning Worship - This week we are continuing our preaching series, "Three Simple Rules," based upon John Wesley's Three Simple Rules for Methodists. This week Pastor Daryl is preaching about the second rule "Do Good" based upon James 1:22-25.

Invite a friend and a neighbor and we hope to see you at 8am, 9:30am, or 11am! All are welcome, all are invited.

2. Wonderful Wednesday Training

Those wishing to volunteer with our after school program Wonderful Wednesday will have a training session on Wednesday August 29 at 3pm in Room 208/210. Wonderful Wednesday runs from September through April of each school year. Do you have a fun skill or talent you would like to teach the kids? Would you be willing to be a helper in one of the rooms? Come on out for the training.

3. New Thursday Worship Service

We are launching a new worship experience on Thursdays in the Family Life Center starting in September. This Seven02 service (named after its start time!) will be contemporary in style and set up in the round. Click here to listen to Pastor Daryl and Worship Leader Joey Landstedt sharing about the vision for this service.

4. Youth Ministry Transition

Our youth director Sharon Quackenbush has discerned a new calling in this season of her life to counseling ministry and is going to be headed back to graduate school soon to facilitate this. While she is still working with our youth at this time, we are currently seeking applicants for a new Youth Minister to lead our growing youth ministry. We are accepting resumes for this position at employment.cumc@gmail.com or by fax at 352-787-9386. More information is available on our church website.

5. We Need You! - We are in need of a few people to help on Sunday mornings.
  • The first way is with the tech aspects of worship at our 8am and 11am worship services. We will provide all the training, but we need people to help with the PowerPoint and soundboard operations during the services. These positions are very important to the flow and experience of worship and truly add to our time together.
  • The other area we are looking for people is to drive a golf cart helping transport people to and from our parking lots. This is often our first point of contact and is extremely important in helping people feel welcome.
If you are interested, please contact the church office by clicking here or calling us at (352) 787-1829. Thank you in advance for your consideration.

6. Be In the Know! - One of the great things about Community is all the options and choices you have to help make disciples and build the Kingdom. And we want you to know about as many of them as possible. The best way to do that is for you to sign up for any of the various ways we have set up to communicate with you. Here is a list of them and how you can sign up or follow them:

  • Churchwide Email System - just call the church office to sign up, (352) 787-1829 or email us by clicking here

Midweek Moment

There is an organization in town that was started a few years ago to help direct the generosity of local churches and businesses to the places in our city that need it the most. Bless Fruitland Park meets monthly at City Hall and our Children's Director, Faye Umble, regularly attends those meetings on our church's behalf. One of the biggest recipients of Bless Fruitland Park's help is Fruitland Park Elementary school.

Every summer Bless Fruitland Park sponsors Project Generosity where they collect funds from churches, individuals and local businesses to help bless the school. These funds are unrestricted, so that Principal Tammy Langley and other administrators can direct it to the items on their wish list, things that district budget dollars cannot be stretched to cover. Over the last few years, FPE has used these funds to bring in the Orlando Science Center for STEM presentations, provide classroom science materials, provide academic incentive awards for students, purchase recess equipment, provide supplies for a new mentoring program, sponsor a chapter of the National Elementary Honor Society, and other things as well.

Our missions committee includes money in its budget every year to help out with Project Generosity and this year Community UMC contributed $2,500 to this particular effort. Daryl, Faye and I were able to be present this morning for the check presentation to Principal Langley. Project Generosity exceeded its goal and was able to raise over $20,000 in cash and supply donations for the school.

What a blessing and privilege it is to be a small part of this effort to help bless our local school. We're so thankful for the generosity of our Community family that helps in efforts such as these.

Blessings,

We are so incredibly grateful for her ministry to the members and families of this congregation. We will be honoring Charlotte in worship on Sunday September 9 and will be hosting a reception in her honor in the Family Life Center after all the worship services are over that day. Please plan to join us in thanking Charlotte for all she has done on behalf of God's kingdom through Community.

Midweek Moment

Last Thursday a group of thirteen people from Community (including Pastor Loida) spent the day working in Bushnell with Habitat for Humanity. They weren't building a Habitat house, but they were working a Habitat Spruce Up Day. All total, there were 30 people working on this one street in a neighborhood helping to beautify and spruce up the houses and yards. Some people picked up trash and others power washed houses. Our Community folks mainly painted a house as their project of the day.

We're so thankful for these volunteers from Community who went and gave up their time in service to others. This was kind of a grassroots effort. Marv Baden had the idea to see how many people would be interested in volunteering with Habitat for the day and during worship one Sunday morning we mentioned folks who were interested could attend an informational meeting with Marv in the Fellowship Hall. Almost 20 people expressed an interest but not all were able to attend on this particular day. This is definitely an opportunity for mission and service that we will be repeating in the future. So watch your bulletins and newsletters for more Habitat and other short-term mission opportunities that come along.

Blessings,

Midweek Moment

Today the Villages Charter school and most private schools started back in session. Next Monday is the date for all the Lake County public schools. Our family has Meet the Teacher Night at Fruitland Park Elementary tomorrow evening for two of our boys and our Children's Director Faye Umble will be at the school then as well to enroll students in Wonderful Wednesday.

As Pastor Loida mentioned during prayer time in worship on Sunday, even if you aren't personally sending a child back to school right now, most of us are impacted in this season with family members and friends who are. And this is a great opportunity to join in prayerful support of the students and teachers in our communities. We're especially mindful of that here at Community, sharing a fence line with the elementary school. Every day over a hundred teachers and staff show up to care for over six hundred young people in our town; and several of the support staff and administration at the school are also members of our church. Of course, starting in September we will be hosting over a hundred of those students every Wednesday on our campus for Wonderful Wednesday and tutoring programs. We're also thankful for the summer GROW Gardens groups that did projects benefiting our school - collecting supplies and sprucing up the front entranceway!  What a great tangible way to show our love and support.

We would love to encourage you this school year to keep the students and teachers in your prayers on a regular basis. One easy way would be to offer up a short prayer as you drive up past the school approaching the church: for the teachers, for the students, for the support staff, for testing. In so many communities, as the school goes, the community follows. We want to do our best to be a support to the school. We're praying for a great year of learning and partnership with our neighbor.

Blessings!
