Thursday Thoughts

1. Following Jesus - The Gospel of Luke. We will explore the life and lessons of Christ as recorded by Luke. We know that Luke was a physician and a very learned man and as a result, we find details in the Gospel of Luke that are not found anywhere else. Come and join us as we allow this Gospel message to wash over us, transforming us from the inside out. This week Pastor Daryl will look at the life and ministry of John the Baptist as a forerunner of Jesus calling us to repentance as we focus on Luke 3:1-22. We will also acknowledge Father's Day as we worship together. Invite a friend and hope to see you all there!

2. Vacation Bible School - Cave Quest VBS at Community UMC is going on NOW!! We have had a wonderful three nights already and have two more left to go. We ask that you all join us in prayer and with presence as we welcome the children of our neighborhood onto our campus. This is our chance to pour out the love and grace of Christ to these children, plants the seeds of God's hope, and let them know they are loved by God and by us.

3. Volunteers Needed - As our church family grows so does the number of volunteers we need. We are asking each of you to consider volunteering for a few areas where we need more hands. One area is in our 8am and 11am services in the role of usher, sound tech, or computer operator. The other area is in our 9:30am service with the take down of the chairs. If you are interested and able to help, on a rotating basis, in any of these areas we would sure like to hear from you. You can contact the church office at 787-1829 or email us by clicking here.

4. Welcoming Loida - There will be a churchwide BBQ after worship on Sunday July 17th which will be an opportunity to welcome our new Associate Pastor, the Rev. Loida Divine to our Community UMC Family.

Also, the women of the UMW will be hosting several Coffee and Dessert with the Pastors gatherings (Debbie, Daryl and Loida) in July and August to help welcome Loida and to connect her with some of our membership. You can call the church office or signup after worship to attend and/or host one of these gatherings.

5. Spiritual Gifts Class - Do you know what your spiritual gifts are? We will be starting a class on Serving from the Heart: Discovering your Gifts and Talents for Service on Monday July 11th at 10am. The class will run for six weeks in Room 104 and will be led by our Minister of Music, Robbie Milam. Signup by calling the church office at 787-1829 or emailing the church office by clicking here.

Midweek Moment

As this blog post comes through this morning, I and many other Methodists are gathered together at the Buena Vista Palace Hotel and Convention Center in Orlando for Annual Conference. Annual Conference is a time when clergy and lay representatives from every church through the Florida Conference gather to celebrate what has been happening in our ministry and to plan for the future as we approve recommendations from conference committees (including our budget and leadership). Merle and Jean Rodkey are our local church representatives from Community to Annual Conference and they will be sitting in on all of the meetings from now through Saturday afternoon.

The theme of this week’s conference is Leading Like Jesus. The symbol is a basin and a towel, reminding us that Jesus’ model of leadership was one of servanthood. Some of our guest speakers for general sessions this week include the Rev. Bill Hybels of Willow Creek Church, Bishop Rev Janice Riggle Huie of the Texas Conference, and Jeff James of the Disney Leadership Institute. Our family will be running the Annual Conference 5k early Friday morning to benefit YAMM (Young Adult Missional Movement). The conclusion of our week will be a Service of Licensing, Commissioning and Ordination on Saturday morning. This will be a very special time for a couple of reasons. One, our new Associate Pastor, Loida Divine will be commissioned as a Provisional Elder. Two, each ordinand is allowed to select two ordained elders or deacons to stand with them and lay hands on them as they are ordained. I am so thrilled to have been asked to stand up with my good friend and colleague, the Rev. Mary Mitchell, who serves Bartley Temple UMC in Gainesville.

True to our theme of Leading Like Jesus, the churches in the Orlando area and the leaders in the Florida Conference have already begun to respond to this week’s tragic shooting in Orlando at the Pulse nightclub where 50 people died and many others were injured. As our Bishop Ken Carter posted on facebook Sunday night: And as United Methodists from across Florida travel to Orlando for Annual Conference this week, I hope we can discover creative, pastoral and grace-filled ways to bear witness to all--including lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons--that together we are God's beloved children. With thousands of us gathered in Orlando this week, what if God is calling us to be a part of the healing? A multi-faith worship service and vigil was held last night at the First United Methodist Church in Orlando with the District Superintendent of the East Central district speaking and there will be a candlelight vigil in solidarity with the LGBT community and the city of Orlando this Thursday evening at the conclusion of our evening worship service. St. Luke’s UMC in Windemere has hosted a huge blood drive already this week and there will be other opportunities for donating blood during Annual Conference. I am sure that there will be other opportunities arising during the week for helping to respond in Christ-like ways in the midst of this crisis.

So there is much to be accomplished in the next several days. We have much to be thankful for in the Florida Conference, in particular the faithfulness and passion of our leadership and the commitment and strength of our connection. Daryl and I would certainly covet your prayers for wisdom and guidance as well as for energy and stamina to get through the marathon long days. And please let us keep the city of Orlando and the families of the shooting victims in our prayers this week.

Blessings,

Come and join us as we allow this Gospel message to wash over us, transforming us from the inside out. This week Pastor Debbie will look at Jesus' earliest beginnings of life as a peasant Jew and see how Luke’s Gospel makes connections over and over again to include Jesus’ impact on the humble and ordinary, as we focus on Luke 1:1-4, 2:21-38. Invite a friend and hope to see you all there!

2. Vacation Bible School - Cave Quest VBS at Community UMC starts Monday!!!! We ask that you all join us in prayer and with presence as we welcome the children of our neighborhood onto our campus. Thursday Thoughts

1. Sunday Worship - Come and join us this week as we conclude our preaching series entitled Christianity 101. We have spent the last several weeks examining one of our most well known pieces of liturgy, the Apostles' Creed, and exploring the basics of our faith as we went line by line through this Creed unpacking the wonderful mysteries and aspects of our faith. This week we will shift our focus to the final phrases "I believe in....the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting" as Pastor Daryl looks at it through the lens of I Corinthians 15: 51-55. We'll also be celebrating communion in all three services: 8am, 9:30am and 11am.  Invite a friend and hope to see you all there!

2. Vacation Bible School - Mark these dates on your calendar, June 13-17. That's when we will be celebrating Cave Quest VBS at Community UMC!!!! There are lots of ways you can help out before or even during VBS if you would like to volunteer and you can sign up to volunteer online. You can also register your children or grandchildren by calling the church office or by using the form online. Our VBS website can be found here.

Midweek Moment

What a great blessing and privilege it was to welcome Rev. Luis Vasquez this past Sunday in worship. Rev. Vasquez is the district superintendent for the Cienfuegos area in Cuba. When we send mission teams to Cuba from Community, they always stay at his home. This was Rev. Vasquez' first trip outside of Cuba!! He spent time with several churches throughout our conference who have sister churches in Cuba and so he got to experience quite a bit of Florida: Tallahassee, Gainesville, Fruitland Park, Tampa and Miami!

After Daryl prayed for Pastor Luis at each worship service this weekend, he prayed in Spanish for all of us and for our ministry at Community UMC and our partnership with Cuba. He was also able to join the Men's Prayer Breakfast yesterday and offer his testimony.

We are so thankful for Glenn and Elsa Kaye who hosted Rev. Vasquez in their home during his visit.
This was a wonderful opportunity to experience our connection beyond the local church, to mission and ministry in other parts of the world. And a great reminder that the Holy Spirit is moving and working in all corners of our globe, not just in our own neighborhood! Our partnership with Cuba is an integral mission here at Community. We covet your prayers and continued support of our mission teams. There will be another group traveling to Cuba in September of this year.

Blessings
